Following in the footsteps of Tyler Perry, her friend and director of her last three films, singer/ actress Janet Jackson and her production company, jdj Entertainment, has signed a production deal with Lionsgate to select, develop and produce a feature film for the independent studio.
"My experiences of working with the creative group at Lionsgate have been powerful and exciting," explains Jackson of her decision to produce a film with the studio. "We've made three films together so far, directed by the gifted and prolific Tyler Perry. There is genius at this studio in every department. They don't just make films, they nurture artists who want to make great films. From story to marketing and promotion, Lionsgate is a great organization, and I am proud that they will be the new home for jdj Entertainment."
In speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the Gary, Indiana native noted her early career as an actress before the singing career came along.
"Many people forget I started out as an actor. I have been fortunate to work in the film industry, though not as much as I would like. I have a passion for storytelling, and have been doing it through my music for some time."
Currently on her 'Number Ones: Up Close and Personal' world tour, consisting of 35 cities, the performer and actress has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and ranks as one of the bestselling artists in the history of contemporary music.
Earlier this month, Jackson's memoir 'True You:A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself'' debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list.
She began her film career with the breakthrough role as Justice in John Singleton's 'Poetic Justice,' opposite slain rapper Tupac Shakur, and starred in Lionsgate's 'Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married,' 'Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too,' and 'For Colored Girls,' all directed by Perry.
