Minister Farrakhan's Radio Show Appearance Dividing Pittsburgh's Black and Jewish Communities?

A live radio broadcast from Pittsburgh featuring controversial Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan will go on as scheduled Friday, despite the withdrawal of a key panel member, the organizer said.

Host Bev Smith blamed Jewish and white Christian organizations for the decision of Melanie Campbell, CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, to withdraw from the program that includes Farrakhan and U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat. One group Smith cited denied any involvement.

Campbell told organizers she feared she would lose funding if she appeared with Farrakhan, said Smith, a nationally syndicated radio talk show host. Smith worked with Farrakhan during his Million Man March in Washington in 1995.

Farrakhan, 77, of Chicago, took his campaign of anti-Semitism to new levels over the past two years, said Oren Segal, director of the Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism in New York.

"The problem is, he still attracts thousands of people to these events," Segal said. "Anytime messages of hate are heard like that, it's a concern."

Campbell is a Washington-based national civil rights leader who works on youth leadership programs, grassroots organizing and issues affecting women and girls. She could not be reached.

"One of the beauties of America is that free speech is protected," said Clyburn, the third-ranking Democrat in the House. "Although I had no idea who all the participants in this program were until yesterday, I look forward to an open and civil discussion at the forum. I will be representing my views and will not hesitate to express and defend my convictions, which are grounded in the Judeo-Christian doctrines I practice."

The radio broadcast is the second in a series of programs about challenges facing predominantly black communities. It will air live at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh on WGBN 1150 AM and on the station's Website.

Smith, who lives downtown, titled the town hall-style meeting "The Disappearing Black Community and How We Can Get it Back." The center gave away tickets to fill the 486-seat auditorium and an overflow room.

"It's un-Christianlike not to talk to other people," Smith said. "My pain is that she had to be forced into this."

Smith said the Jewish Chronicle, a Pittsburgh publication, and Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania were among those opposed to her program.

The Jewish Chronicle, which has called Farrakhan a "rabid anti-Semite," spoke against his appearance in a recent editorial. Chronicle Executive Editor Lee Chottiner declined to comment.

Today Is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

-By Hydeia Broadbent

Today is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. On this day, we must
take the time to educate our sisters, our daughters and ourselves on the importance of
knowing our HIV status.

March is Women' s History Month, and this month we recognize great women and the changes they have made in our society and across the world. Therefore, I ask that today we take the time to open up and discuss with our families and friends the importance of knowing their HIV status!

In 2011 we must educate all women about being responsible for their own sexual health. At the end of 2009 it was estimated that out of the 33.3 million adults worldwide living with HIV and AIDS, more than half are women.

Why are our numbers so high? We need to ask ourselves: Where did we drop the ball?

We also have to realize that it' s not too late to save our sisters.

The women who came before us fought for our rights in all areas of life so that we, as the new generation of Mothers and Daughters, could have equal opportunity. Remember when being a woman also meant being a part of a sisterhood? Why have we stopped protecting each other?

When it comes to the fight against HIV, we have sadly let the young women of today and ourselves down!

Most people believe AIDS is something only gay men have to worry, about but I am here to tell you that AIDS is something EVERYONE has to worry about. We have to stop thinking AIDS is a gay disease and start realizing it' s a people disease! The H in HIV stands for Human, meaning anyone who takes part in any unsafe sexual act with a person who they did not see HIV test results for can be at risk for contracting HIV.

72% of women contract HIV through heterosexual contact and we cannot continue to blame men who sleep with men. Yes, there may be a few who are not open and honest about their sexuality, but they play a very small factor in why women are contracting HIV/AIDS at such an alarming rate. We are to blame for our rising numbers! We do not demand an AIDS test after we catch our partners stepping out on us, and we don' t use condoms when we know we are having sex with a man who we share. Some of us who are on the pill do not see any reason to ask for a condom for a one-night stand with a man after meeting him at the club.

Middle class women are not immune to this behavior. They have to step up and ask if they are really being safe in their sexual activities. In most relationships we start out using condoms and then, after a while, once the trust factor comes in, we become comfortable so the condoms go away.

We think that because he is a suit and tie kind of a guy, he couldn't possibly have an STD or HIV. After a while, if that relationship doesn't work we take some time to ourselves, maybe a month or two or even a year, then we're at it all over again, never once going to take an HIV test while looking for Mr. Right!
So now ask yourselves: are you truly making better choices when it comes to your sexual health than the sister in the club every weekend that we look down on?

We feel because we have a little more money than most and more "class" that HIV just isn't in our section of the world. Somehow our minds and our egos have told us that middle class is an elite group, while HIV didn't get that memo!

We have dropped the ball on reminding our daughters of their value. We are not helping them to see how powerful their voices are, especially when it comes to their bodies. We cannot address HIV without addressing low self-esteem.

Would a young girl with high self-esteem be able to be talked out of using a condom? Would a young girl with high self-esteem be willing to have sex with no strings attached?

In 2005, girls represented 43 percent of AIDS cases reported among people aged 13 to
19.
We cannot ignore the numbers; our girls need help! As women, we need help!

Today, there are approximately 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S., including nearly 280,000 women. In 2008, there were 9,813 AIDS diagnoses among women. We have to address how we feel about ourselves when making sexual choices that could have a lifelong and lasting effect. We cannot be silent in our relationships on the topic of HIV/AIDS.

"I want to use a condom BUT I don' t want him to think I don' t trust him"; "I want an HIV test BUT I don' t want him to leave me." Whenever we follow with a BUT, we are questioning our own self-worth! We may as well be saying, "I want to protect myself, BUT I'm not worth protecting."

On this day, I ask you to get tested for HIV/AIDS. Knowing your status is power, and early HIV detection can be the difference between life and death. Talk about HIV/AIDS with your sexual partner because if you cannot have an open and honest discussion about it, what does that say about the value you hold for your life?

Also, use social networks for good; post random facts about HIV/AIDS. Every nine-and-a-half minutes a person contracts HIV - your post or tweet can change someone' s life!

3 Health Signs You Should Never Ignore

Self diagnosis seems to be everyone's favorite way to explain a pain, lump or fatigue, but what's the use of a health care plan if you're going to be your own doctor?

The Internet provides information on health issues, which allows people to make their own medical decisions. Your assumptions could be inaccurate, and you will spend time treating a health concern you never even had. Self diagnosis may save you time and money, but when the problem becomes severe, it will only result in less treatment options and more medical costs.

In fact, inaccurate self diagnosis and its resulting physical and financial effect has its own term. Medical professionals refer to these risks as "shadow diseases," where one illness can have a domino effect on another.

David Pryor, MD., founder of blackwomenshealth.com and board-certified physician in internal medicine, says many people underestimate minute health signs.

"I think a lot people experience certain symptoms, but they assume these symptoms can't be very serious," Pryor says.

The symptoms, however, could be a sign of cancer, heart disease, infections or diabetes. Here are a few signs that are best left up to professional diagnosis.

1. FATIGUE AND SHORTNESS OF BREATH is a signal women should be cautious of. Pryor says fatigue and shortness of breath along with anxiety could be associated with heart attacks.

"Women don't always get the common heart pains like men," Pryor says. "Heart disease is the number-one killer of both women and men, and a number of studies show that women experience heart attacks and chest pains in different ways than men."

A temporary weakness in one side of the body or an inability to speak could be a transient ischemic attack (TIA), which is a mini stroke. The American Heart Association says these are warning strokes with no lasting effect, but in half of all TIA cases, a stroke occurs within a year.

"If you can't find your words and then it goes back to normal, it is something to worry about and you need to be evaluated ASAP," Pryor says.

2. BLOOD IN URINE. A sign that may seem embarrassing is traces of blood in the urine. People may not run to tell their physicians about this one because it's not that easy to explain. Patients may skip out on these details, but Pryor says that this could be a signal of kidney stones, an infection or a sign of cancer.

3. BLOOD IN MUCUS. In cold season, coughing up blood may appear to be a symptom related to a tough cold, but the amounts of blood could have other meanings. This may be a sign of a lung infection such as bronchitis, which is caused by exposure to bacteria.

"It could be a sign of an infection, but be more concerned if it persists," Pryor says. "It could be associated with lung cancer."

Any time you experience abnormal health signs, pay attention to the issue. Think about what may have triggered the symptoms and whether it has happened before.

Pryor offers three steps to take when an inexplicable case happens:

1. Take your symptom seriously. According to Pryor, underestimating the health concern means you will not take care of it. In order to receive medical treatment, you must first acknowledge it as an issue.

2. If it's threatening, call 911. Don't gamble with your life. If it's not threatening, but doesn't improve within 24-48 hours, you should consult a physician.

3. Be in tune with your health. Know your body's behaviors. Something that normally occurred rarely but begins to occur more often can only mean one thing: Your problem is entering stronger stages. Over time, the severity of the issues grow and can limit the options for treatment.

"The sooner you know about it, you can get on medication and live longer," Pryor says, "There are less options for treatment in the later stages."

Have you ever ignored a health symptom that turned into a bigger issue? Tell us your story.

Black Woman Cake...written by a Black Man (It's a Great Message) NEVER FORGET!

Black Woman Cake...written by a Black Man (It's a Great Message) NEVER FORGET!
THERE WERE SPECIAL INGREDIENTS GOD USED IN MAKING A GOOD WOMAN.

I'm making a black woman cake cause I'm hungry as hell. And the sweet tooth I have only a sister can break the spell.
Let me reach into my spice rack to see what I can get.
To make a mix that will stick to my stomach you can bet.
2 cups of intelligence
1 cup of sugar brown
(Cause she's got to be sweet, mental, sound and deep)
Cinnamon is always good to accent the taste
A few cups of culture, so she's down for her race
(You see I won't bite into anything that's not conscious of its own, that's why I stick to chocolate and leave angel food alone)
I am adding butter cause she must be smooth
2 raisins for the dimples will also be cool
I must add eggs so she can reproduce
(Can't leave her hanging cause I like children too)
I think I'll add a little salt, to balance her out
And a dominant profile, to show she has clout
For a responsible woman, I'll throw in some yeast

(So she'll swell with juices, when I'm ready to feast)
I'll add 7 cups of courage and into the oven to bake
Turn it to 360 degrees, To balance out her mental state.
Now that it's done brothers, I won't share her wealth, but I'm sharing the recipe as I'm consuming this black woman all by myself.

Good Black Women are indeed all around us.
We pass them on the streets, in the malls, in captivity behind the walls, and in the hall at work. Most we can't see because we don't know what a good woman really looks like. She usually isn't flashy enough or rich enough to turn our heads. She might not wear a fur coat or push a Lexus. She might not have a "body by Fisher" or a face for "Ebony." But as you mature, you realize it's better to find someone who's got your back than someone who turns your head.

A Good Black Woman doesn't agree whole-heartedly with everything you say. She doesn't just tell you what you want to hear and do the opposite. She doesn't have to declare how sensitive, sweet, caring, sincere, yada, yada, yada, she is (she won't have to...because it shows). She has her own opinions, and you may clash, but she doesn't have to degrade you to prove she's right. She even admits at times to being wrong, especially if you are willing to do the same.

A Good Black Woman is not going to meet every item on your checklist. She is human with frailties & faults mixed in with all of her wonderful, sensual attributes. She needs your love & respect. She needs to feel that you don't have to catch her doing something wrong so you can declare "Aha I knew all along"

A Good Black Woman doesn't necessarily give you a huge Birthday or Valentine gift. She shows her love in the ways that are comfortable to her. Don't judge her by TV standards. No one is living that Fairy tale--for real.

BLACK WOMEN, we salute you, and thank you for who you are, and all you've done.

Pass this along to some of the "Good Black Women" you know, and a few men that need to read it.

Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate; Proverbs 31:31

Should the NAACP Be Rewarding Artists Who Promote Sexism and the N-Word?

Bone Crusher
Last night, I was up watching last year's Hip-Hop Honors on VH-1. I knew that it wasn't live, since the rappers T.I. and Gucci Mane weren't in jail. In fact, I find it interesting that I had to count and remember which artists were incarcerated out of the bunch, since it seems that hip-hop has now made it cool to go to jail, at least for a little while.

As a fan of hip-hop, I enjoyed the music being performed by various artists. I couldn't, however, help but be disturbed by trends that become more and more apparent to me as I get older. At one point, there were three "interesting" songs performed in a row, one by an artist by the name of "Bone Crusher," a second performed by Gucci Mane and a third performed by the Ying-Yang Twins. Bone Crusher rapped about "popping the trunk" and killing another "n*gga" who spoke to him disrespectfully. To be more precise, the lyrics were as follows:

Gucci Mane
Let a choppa go PLOOOOOOWWW! to yo melon

Now the plasma is oozin outta yo cerebellum

AttenSHUNNNNN! F*ck n*gga, now you swellin

You ain't talkin hardcore, now is ya? Lil' b*tch!

He then goes on to mention that he's "on dat crank and on some of dat drank," with the drugs apparently fueling the rage that leads him to murder another human being, most likely a fellow black male. Bone Crusher's imagery of a black man's brains being splattered on the street made me think about my best friend who was shot in the head right in front of his daughter. The police don't always send someone to your house to clean up after a homicide, so my friend's brother had to clean his brains off the floor.

After Bone Crusher, there was Gucci Mane, who performed his song 'Wasted.' In the song, he basically tells the audience that everyone should drink as much alcohol as possible, including the fact that we should "Wake up in the morning, 10 o'clock dranking." The song becomes an anthem, as this "black leader" continuously repeats the chorus, "Party party party, let's all get wasted." This song made me think about the young black college students I know who've died this semester alone in incidents surrounding excessive alcohol consumption.

Ying Yang Twins
Finally, the Ying Yang Twins and Lil Jon performed their song "Get Low," where they are effectively talking about making "b*tches crawl" in the strip club, and all the nasty things they want to do to them after the night is over. This reminded me of people I know who've died of AIDs, some of whom thought it was okay to put their sex organs to use at every available opportunity.
These three songs represent the formula for hip-hop commercial success: Rap about going to the club, getting drunk and/or high, degrading women and killing another black man. Yes, corporate America has done a good job of training us to destroy ourselves. There is nothing more profitable than genocide.

Most interesting is the fact that the NAACP has jumped on board by promoting artists who use sexist and violent lyrics in their music. Perhaps in their misguided efforts to remain hip and relevant, the NAACP has featured artists like Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj, each of whom is responsible for quite a few objectionable lyrics in their music (I encourage you to look up the lyrics of some of their songs). While the NAACP is not as bad as VH-1 in condoning anything that comes out of the mouth of an artist, one has to wonder why the organization that stands as our community's moral compass would agree to such a thing. After all, aren't they the ones who held a funeral for the n-word just a few years ago? If so, then why are they the first to dig the word back up and sell it to the general public?

The cast of the Tom Joyner Morning Show defended the NAACP, arguing that rewarding hip-hop artists is a way for the organization to remain relevant.
"This is show business... and if you want them (the NAACP) to be prime time, and air their awards show on a major network, then you're going to have to have the rappers," said Joyner.

I'll admit that Joyner's remarks confuse me, because I never thought that the NAACP's job was to be "prime time" and on a major network, especially Fox. NAACP leadership never learned that in a capitalist society that once held black people as slaves, money has been a consistent tool of oppression. So, by forming an addiction to the commodity being used to oppress your people, you can become a conductor of the oppression itself.

The battle has come to a head, as the "Enough Is Enough" movement has confronted both the NAACP and the Tom Joyner Morning Show for simply accepting the status quo as it pertains to hip-hop. According to Rev. Delman Coates, pastor of the Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Md., the NAACP is going too far with their promotion of hip-hop artists:

"These sad and unfortunate remarks represent a fissure among African-American progressives regarding the appropriateness of glorifying negative images and offensive messages of Black people in the public square. It is quite unfortunate that Mr. Joyner thinks degrading women, using the 'N' word, and portraying today's youth as pimps, gangsters and thugs has entertainment value."

When I hear this dialogue in our community, I am reminded of the Opium Wars, an epic battle over trade disputes between England and China that occurred in the middle of the 19th century. The British had found that they could make lots of money by exporting Opium to the Chinese people. As a result, China was inundated with addicts, many of whom had come to accept Opium use as a way of life. Citizens were dying before the age of 50, productivity was at an all-time low, and the foundation of the Chinese family was in serious decay. Many of the Chinese leaders who were once responsible for protecting the people had given in to the financial temptations of compromising their values.

There were, however, leaders in the community who didn't go along with the crowd. They spoke up about how Opium use was killing the community. They even went as far as doing anything it took to stop the trade of Opium within the borders of their home country. Because they hadn't become dependent on money being provided by the British, these leaders were free to speak honestly about the problems of Opium use. If they had not taken a stand, I wonder if China would be the powerful nation that it is today.

Perhaps when it's all said and done, we must reflect deeply on the cultural double-standard that exists within hip-hop. The death and destruction of African Americans is being mass marketed to our community, where kids are being told to get high and drunk at every available opportunity, to kill one another, to have promiscuous sex and to engage in other forms of irresponsible behavior. When we see our kids letting their pants sag, getting tatoos from head to toe, engaging in the use of drugs and embracing violent behavior, do we blame the youth for their behavior or do we blame their elders for failing to confront the music that is brainwashing them?

One would expect that the most righteous within our community, meaning the NAACP, would be first in line to say that these messages are not good for any of us. Instead, we are left feeling that the NAACP is more concerned about appearing to be cool, wealthy and hip than they are about serving as guardians of our children's futures. Mingling with Hollywood superstars can be intoxicating, and some of our leaders are getting just a little bit tipsy.

Let's be clear: Pastor Coates is right about hip-hop. He admits that he's a fan of much of the music, but that something must be done to confront the destructive messages. The Anti-Defamation League, which protects the Jewish Community would not, in a million years, host an awards show that promotes artists telling Jews to murder one another, use drugs, have irresponsible sex and waste their money. So, I can only wonder if it is their quest for financial resources that leads the NAACP to promote artists who serve to undermine the values that the organization claims to hold dear.

Three little girls who formed the group "Watoto from the Nile," recently sang an open letter to the artist Lil Wayne. In their song, they question his behavior, his promotion of drug use and his disrespect for women. While the NAACP has not endorsed Lil Wayne in their awards show, it should be noted that they did nominate Nicki Minaj, an artist whose brand is owned by, performs with and is heavily-associated with Lil Wayne. By speaking up about the problems of hip-hop, these three little girls have shown more courage than the rest of us.

Perhaps we should start listening to the children.

8 Foods That Will Help You Live Longer

We hope this article reaches you before you make a dash out of the office for a lunch full of health mistakes. However, lunch hour is probably not the only time women make bad food decisions.

Many of the health issues that we deal with could be reduced or even prevented if they were more cautious with food choices.

Although health problems can be hereditary (and there's no escaping that), daily habits, including food choices and fitness patterns, can determine the severity of diseases.

According to the National Stroke Association, one half of all African-American women will die from stroke or heart disease. Ironically, this is one health issue that is not always caused by genetics.

We must fight the facts.

Icilma Fergus, MD. FACC., assistant professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, says one of a woman's best preventative measures is to eliminate processed foods and foods made with high fructose corn syrup from her diet.

According to the National Stroke Association, one out of three African Americans suffer from high blood pressure. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is cause by high levels of sodium and water in the blood stream, which cause the veins to pump with agitated force.

Fergus recommends green leafy vegetables as one of the top healthy food options to reduce high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.

"[Green vegetables] are a source of fiber which cleans out your intestines; they are low in calories and high in nutrients," says Fergus, chair of community programming for the Association of Black Cardiologists.

Sulforaphane, a phytochemical found in broccoli, increases the amount of enzymes that can deactivate free radicals and carcinogens, which causes certain types of cancer. Free radicals and carcinogens change the body's DNA and cause tumor growth.

According to Stanford Medicine's cancer center Website, phytochemicals fight off bacteria found in plants, and can also be found in green vegetables, dark berries (raspberries and blueberries) and soy nuts.

Fergus also says the omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish, such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, balance good and bad cholesterol levels to reduce heart risks, but it also drags tumor developments.

"You want to make sure you include fish in your diet," Fergus says. "Fish should most likely be baked, broiled or boiled."

Other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids include kidney beans, flaxseeds and nut oils.

Aside from eating foods packed with phytochemicals and omega-3 fatty acids, it is important to stick to a fitness diet.
"The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week to stay fit," Fergus says.

With alarming high blood pressure and stroke rates, it is important to choose foods with specific benefits using alternative cooking methods and incorporate a fitness routine in your daily schedule.

It can be difficult to challenge habits that you are comfortable with, but it will reduce various cancer types, hypertension and stroke risks.

Sprint: $69.99 Cell Phone Plan is a Money Saver

Sprint clears the confusion created by recent claims from AT&T and Verizon about pricing by launching a new marketing campaign where Sprint says, “Our $69.99 is worth more than their $69.99.”  The advantages consumers get with Sprint’s $69.99 Everything Data plan are highlighted in print and online advertisements and they include nationwide unlimited text and picture messaging, unlimited Web, unlimited GPS navigation and unlimited calling to any mobile in America, compared to AT&T and Verizon’s $69.99 pricing plans, which are good for unlimited talk only. And Sprint’s $69.99 plans are available with any phone while AT&T and Verizon’s are limited to lower-end phones. Customers can learn more about the value of Sprint’s plans by visiting any Sprint store or going online to www.sprint.com/anymobileanytime
Sprint also features the return of CEO Dan Hesse in a TV advertisement as part of the campaign, building on previous successful campaigns that featured Hesse. In the spot, Hesse talks about how most people today use their phone for more than just talking but that with the $69.99 plans offered by AT&T and Verizon all you get is unlimited calling and none of the extras Sprint provides.

“Recently AT&T and Verizon have attempted to confuse the marketplace by lowering their pricing to $69.99, but theirs are for calling only,” said Mike Goff, Sprint’s vice president of corporate marketing. “This campaign will resonate with consumers by showing all the additional benefits consumers get beyond just calls with Sprint’s $69.99 plan. In today’s economic environment customers are interested in more than just voice pricing. They also want the best value for all the other things they rely on their wireless phone for and Sprint delivers.”

Everything Data plans start at $69.99 per month and include Any Mobile, Anytime for unlimited calling with any U.S. wireless user, plus unlimited text, picture and video messaging, e-mail, Web browsing, social networking and more. For individuals and families, Sprint Everything Data plans include more value than competitors:
  • Unlimited GPS navigation and exclusive applications, such as NFL Mobile Live and NASCAR Sprint Cup MobileSM, are included in Sprint Everything Data plans at no additional charge.AT&T and Verizon charge an additional $9.99 per month for GPS navigation.
  • Everything Data plans automatically enroll customers in the Sprint Premier loyalty program, which provides annual device upgrades, discounted accessories and other benefits.
In the print advertisement, the graphic included in this press release highlights some of the differences.
To find the Sprint plan that best fits their needs, customers can use the Sprint Plan Optimizer, available by logging into their My Sprint account at www.sprint.com.
