Time to Lose Some Weight Babe

Relationships often play out with two sets of rules: his and hers. Nowhere do double standards flourish more than when it comes to issues of weight. Men want their girlfriends and wives to stay in shape. While it may or may not always work out that way, we certainly find ways to make our feelings known: "Babe, you sure you want to eat that deep-fried doughnut?" After all, there is only so much cushion for the pushin' a man needs.

But turn the tables, and you find that most men roll differently. And when I say "roll," I mean actually rolling up on the drive-thru and, two heartbeats away from cardiac arrest, we'll bark out our order: "I'd like my double standard with cheese please."

Indulge me as I speak from my own personal experience because, you know, that's something I never do.
I've been married for close to six years. For the first four, I still enjoyed a very high-functioning metabolism. The energy it took me to even step on a scale seemed to burn 200 calories. But to quote Notorious B.I.G 'Things Done Changed.' My metabolism, once a Kenyan track star, is now the slow Swedish cat bringing up the rear hoping not to get lapped. All told, I gained 15 pounds last year. And here I was giving my wife grief if she ordered French fries.
One evening I remember being at the movie theater eating a gratuitously big bag of popcorn. Halfway through the movie, I find myself trudging out to the lobby to reup on the butter. Yes, more butter. Fabulous idea. While doing so, a young woman behind the counter offers to "top off my popcorn." Top off my popcorn for free? I had never heard of such thing. I wondered for a moment, "Is this a sexual metaphor that I need to decode; is she hitting on me or is this the explanation to American obesity?" Better question - was I part of the problem?

I tried to put it out of my mind, but later that night, something funny happened on my way to the fridge for a late snack. "My sexy" sent me a telepathic message stating that he wanted to come home. It had been a long time since I heard from or seen "My sexy." And I can't really blame him for leaving the pudgy bastard that I was becoming. The two couldn't co-exist. He said that I mistreated him, that I disrespected him. I shot him back some mental telepathy of own and asked "Are we gay because it certainly sounds like it?" But fast forward a year after reuniting with "My sexy," and I'm back down to my trimmer self of old.

"My sexy" is happy. My wife is happy. Then again, my wife never really complained. And therein lies part of the problem. The double standard on weight issues in relationships is due, in part, to women who believe a way to a man's heart is through his stomach. It's the human teddy bear syndrome. But have you ever seen a teddy bear with heart disease or diabetes or breathe like Darth Vader climbing a short flight of steps? No, because they are cute inanimate objects that don't require health care. They don't require funerals either or leave their spouses tons of credit card debt after they pass prematurely.

Weight double standards are not healthy -- physically or emotionally. We need to stop supersizing our fries and our relationships in the process. Just my thoughts. I'm stepping down from my soapbox now and on to the treadmill.

6 Grab-and-go proteins that fill you up

Protein is a dieter’s best friend. It is an essential ingredient for losing weight and keeping it off because it’s a potent calorie burner that plays a role in nearly every body function, from building shapely biceps to regulating sleep and boosting immunity. High-protein foods take more work to chew and longer to leave your stomach, so you take more time eating (and have more time to register that you’re full). They also slow down the release of carbs and fat into your bloodstream. You feel full sooner and stay satisfied longer.
Thing is, eating a steak or a piece of chicken in your car or at your desk at work isn’t always realistic, so most of the foods we choose for single-fisted consumption are highly processed and lacking in this essential nutrient. Here are 6 grab-and-go proteins to take with you for a midday snack.

18 ways to simplify your diet for easy weight loss

1) Jerky: Jerky (beef or turkey) makes a great snack because it’s low in fat, lean and savory, and high in the chewiness factor (look for lower-sodium varieties if you’re concerned about the salt). You can find a wide variety of flavors, from teriyaki to barbecue. You can also find chicken and buffalo (and, in certain parts of the country, salmon) jerky. Jerky packs 10 g of protein and about 100 calories per ounce.
2) Roasted soy nuts: Almonds, peanuts, and cashews are great. But let’s face it: You can get burned out on the same nut mix. Try roasted soy nuts for a complete protein snack; for a little extra heat, try the wasabi-flavored ones. Each 1⁄4 cup provides 6 g of protein and 120 calories.
3) Cheese packs: Not just for kids’ lunch boxes, string cheese and other portioned cheeses such as The Laughing Cow Wedges or Mini Babybels are the perfect complements to an apple, pear, or bunch of grapes. These low-calorie protein packs  are satisfying enough to carry you through to your next meal.

4) Protein bars: They are the perfect filling, portable snack to save you from a desperate trip to the vending machine or drive-thru. Pick up bars that are about 200 calories each, such as Luna Protein bars (170 to 190 calories, 12 g of protein) or Honey Stinger 10-gram protein bars (190 to 200 calories, 10 g of protein), to stash in your purse or work bag.

5) Hard-cooked eggs: Eggs really are one of nature’s most perfect portable foods. Packed with protein and antioxidants, they satisfy your hunger and improve your health. Try Eggland’s Best Hard-Cooked Peeled eggs for a no-muss, no-fuss snack or meal. Along with the usual protein punch, these edible orbs also deliver 10 times more vitamin E and two times more omega-3 fatty acids than other eggs.

6) Fat-free or low-fat milk: It’s the perfect pre- or postexercise snack. You can stock up on small containers of shelf-stable milk (such as Horizon’s 8-ounce cartons); they don’t even need to be refrigerated. Two cups deliver more than 16 g of high-quality, filling protein that will satisfy your hunger and help keep you hydrated. In one study, women who had 18 g of protein 20 minutes before strength-training torched almost 9% more calories at rest 24 hours later than if they didn’t drink the pre-workout milk.

Mo'Nique Shares Her Weight Loss Secrets

As songbird Jennifer Hudson faces scrutiny over the 80 pounds she recently dropped, fellow Oscar-winning actress Mo'Nique isn't fazed by public opinion and plans to drop even more weight.

Two years after unveiling her new physique, Mo'Nique is still a stunner. She initially dropped 45 pounds, down from 262 to 217, and currently fluctuates between 211 and 206. While her progress is pretty impressive, the late-night talk show diva has another goal in mind.

"I want to get to 180. That's an amazing weight for me. I'm still a thick girl but it's a healthy weight," Mo'Nique, 43, says, explaining that she'd never seen that weight when she stepped on the scale. "I went from being a child to a woman. I remember being weighed in the tenth grade and I was 190."

She has shared with her 'The Mo'Nique Show' audience that keeping the weight off "is a constant commitment that you have to follow." Mo'Nique admits that while promoting being big, beautiful and healthy, she wasn't always taking her advice on the healthy part.

"I have worked so hard to get to this, do you hear me?" she told audience members during her show's premier season as she sashayed in a very flattering black dress and pointed out her new-found curves.

So, just how much hard work has she put in? Well, at least five times a week, Mo'Nique is up at 5:30 a.m. getting it in at the gym. She works for an hour with a trainer who keeps the routines exciting by having the comedienne do everything from weight training, boxing, and football drills to sprinting, pull-ups on the dip bar and, on warm days, jogging outdoors. Her workouts have increased in intensity and frequency over time, with her starting out with three times a week two years ago.

And Mo'Nique enjoys it. "It's fun, especially when you start seeing results," says the svelte actress, who works out with two other women. Although she could feel the weight coming off, it took about a year before she could really see the difference, and that was motivating.

"I love the way that shape is shaping up. Not that it's all the way I want it to be but the way it's shaping up!" she exclaims excitedly.

Now, when it comes to eating, Mo'Nique's found that to be a bit more challenging. Sure, she has will power, but avoiding late-night eating was an adjustment. She tries not to eat after 8 p.m. and her menu options often consists of fish, soups, yogurt, cashews and salads sprinkled with strawberries, cucumbers, raisins and a homemade dressing of honey, apple cider vinegar and oil.

"It's very healthy, but it's very good. You begin to know what your body needs," she says.

Moderation is key in order to maintain her weight while consuming the calorie-rich foods typically served during the holiday season. "The one thing I didn't want to do is drive myself crazy where it's I can only have this, I can only have that," she says. Presently there are things that her body doesn't even crave anymore.

"I used to absolutely adore Buffalo wings. Girl, I used to adore Buffalo wings. Now I can leave it," says Mo'Nique, referencing a feat which may be tougher in metro Atlanta, where there are wing spots all over.

She takes it moment-by-moment and realizes the risks involved if not disciplined.

"I know if I go eat those Buffalo wings and I don't go to the gym, one day becomes the next day and the next day and the next day and then you look up and you're almost 300 pounds," she explains.

In all honesty, Mo'Nique is trying to get away from eating chicken as well and one day would like to have a diet that mirrors vegetarianism.

"I'm aiming not to eat anything with a face. Because they have parents; they come from a family. Really, it's like, if we were back in the dinosaur days, the dinosaurs were eating the people. You see? I want to really not eat anything with a face; anything that's living," Mo'Nique says half-jokingly.

Her current weight loss plan is the first one she's stuck with consistently, although she did try a few diets in the past. "I remember when they talked about the cabbage diet. I think I did that for two days, I was like uhn-uhn," Mo'Nique says.

This time, she says, she couldn't fool around because "at 262 pounds I could have never done that show because I wouldn't have been able to have the energy."

But it's the men in her life – husband Sidney Hicks, her 5-year-old twin sons and her 20-year-old son – that keep her sticking with her new regimen.

"When I look at our kids, it's like, 'let me go put the work in because I don't want to be a burden to my family for being neglectful,'" says Mo'Nique, who also started to see a therapist as she began to slim down. The sessions help her uncover the reasons behind the weight gain and help her to really get to know herself.

That's the message she tells other plus-sized women who seem inspired by her progress and want to make a lifestyle change too.

"For the most part sisters are like, 'hey, let's do it,'" she says.

Mo'Nique has a few motivational tips women who may need a little nudge with weight management:

1. Don't let a hairstyle stop you. "Often times I hear sisters say, 'Girl, I ain't getting my hair messed up.' It's like we'll be unhealthy because we're worried what our hair looks like," Mo'Nique says. Her suggestion? "Get you some fabulous wigs, honey, slap that hair up and go get fit."

2. Make the time. Many women say they're too busy to workout. No excuses, says Mo'Nique. "You deserve that time. You still deserve your time. It takes 60 minutes out of a 24-hour day. You still have 23 hours left," she says.

3. Just do it. Mo'Nique advises you to put your best foot forward and keep on moving. "Discover the woman inside," she says. "You'll feel better."

Today Is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

-By Hydeia Broadbent

Today is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. On this day, we must
take the time to educate our sisters, our daughters and ourselves on the importance of
knowing our HIV status.

March is Women' s History Month, and this month we recognize great women and the changes they have made in our society and across the world. Therefore, I ask that today we take the time to open up and discuss with our families and friends the importance of knowing their HIV status!

In 2011 we must educate all women about being responsible for their own sexual health. At the end of 2009 it was estimated that out of the 33.3 million adults worldwide living with HIV and AIDS, more than half are women.

Why are our numbers so high? We need to ask ourselves: Where did we drop the ball?

We also have to realize that it' s not too late to save our sisters.

The women who came before us fought for our rights in all areas of life so that we, as the new generation of Mothers and Daughters, could have equal opportunity. Remember when being a woman also meant being a part of a sisterhood? Why have we stopped protecting each other?

When it comes to the fight against HIV, we have sadly let the young women of today and ourselves down!

Most people believe AIDS is something only gay men have to worry, about but I am here to tell you that AIDS is something EVERYONE has to worry about. We have to stop thinking AIDS is a gay disease and start realizing it' s a people disease! The H in HIV stands for Human, meaning anyone who takes part in any unsafe sexual act with a person who they did not see HIV test results for can be at risk for contracting HIV.

72% of women contract HIV through heterosexual contact and we cannot continue to blame men who sleep with men. Yes, there may be a few who are not open and honest about their sexuality, but they play a very small factor in why women are contracting HIV/AIDS at such an alarming rate. We are to blame for our rising numbers! We do not demand an AIDS test after we catch our partners stepping out on us, and we don' t use condoms when we know we are having sex with a man who we share. Some of us who are on the pill do not see any reason to ask for a condom for a one-night stand with a man after meeting him at the club.

Middle class women are not immune to this behavior. They have to step up and ask if they are really being safe in their sexual activities. In most relationships we start out using condoms and then, after a while, once the trust factor comes in, we become comfortable so the condoms go away.

We think that because he is a suit and tie kind of a guy, he couldn't possibly have an STD or HIV. After a while, if that relationship doesn't work we take some time to ourselves, maybe a month or two or even a year, then we're at it all over again, never once going to take an HIV test while looking for Mr. Right!
So now ask yourselves: are you truly making better choices when it comes to your sexual health than the sister in the club every weekend that we look down on?

We feel because we have a little more money than most and more "class" that HIV just isn't in our section of the world. Somehow our minds and our egos have told us that middle class is an elite group, while HIV didn't get that memo!

We have dropped the ball on reminding our daughters of their value. We are not helping them to see how powerful their voices are, especially when it comes to their bodies. We cannot address HIV without addressing low self-esteem.

Would a young girl with high self-esteem be able to be talked out of using a condom? Would a young girl with high self-esteem be willing to have sex with no strings attached?

In 2005, girls represented 43 percent of AIDS cases reported among people aged 13 to
19.
We cannot ignore the numbers; our girls need help! As women, we need help!

Today, there are approximately 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S., including nearly 280,000 women. In 2008, there were 9,813 AIDS diagnoses among women. We have to address how we feel about ourselves when making sexual choices that could have a lifelong and lasting effect. We cannot be silent in our relationships on the topic of HIV/AIDS.

"I want to use a condom BUT I don' t want him to think I don' t trust him"; "I want an HIV test BUT I don' t want him to leave me." Whenever we follow with a BUT, we are questioning our own self-worth! We may as well be saying, "I want to protect myself, BUT I'm not worth protecting."

On this day, I ask you to get tested for HIV/AIDS. Knowing your status is power, and early HIV detection can be the difference between life and death. Talk about HIV/AIDS with your sexual partner because if you cannot have an open and honest discussion about it, what does that say about the value you hold for your life?

Also, use social networks for good; post random facts about HIV/AIDS. Every nine-and-a-half minutes a person contracts HIV - your post or tweet can change someone' s life!

3 Health Signs You Should Never Ignore

Self diagnosis seems to be everyone's favorite way to explain a pain, lump or fatigue, but what's the use of a health care plan if you're going to be your own doctor?

The Internet provides information on health issues, which allows people to make their own medical decisions. Your assumptions could be inaccurate, and you will spend time treating a health concern you never even had. Self diagnosis may save you time and money, but when the problem becomes severe, it will only result in less treatment options and more medical costs.

In fact, inaccurate self diagnosis and its resulting physical and financial effect has its own term. Medical professionals refer to these risks as "shadow diseases," where one illness can have a domino effect on another.

David Pryor, MD., founder of blackwomenshealth.com and board-certified physician in internal medicine, says many people underestimate minute health signs.

"I think a lot people experience certain symptoms, but they assume these symptoms can't be very serious," Pryor says.

The symptoms, however, could be a sign of cancer, heart disease, infections or diabetes. Here are a few signs that are best left up to professional diagnosis.

1. FATIGUE AND SHORTNESS OF BREATH is a signal women should be cautious of. Pryor says fatigue and shortness of breath along with anxiety could be associated with heart attacks.

"Women don't always get the common heart pains like men," Pryor says. "Heart disease is the number-one killer of both women and men, and a number of studies show that women experience heart attacks and chest pains in different ways than men."

A temporary weakness in one side of the body or an inability to speak could be a transient ischemic attack (TIA), which is a mini stroke. The American Heart Association says these are warning strokes with no lasting effect, but in half of all TIA cases, a stroke occurs within a year.

"If you can't find your words and then it goes back to normal, it is something to worry about and you need to be evaluated ASAP," Pryor says.

2. BLOOD IN URINE. A sign that may seem embarrassing is traces of blood in the urine. People may not run to tell their physicians about this one because it's not that easy to explain. Patients may skip out on these details, but Pryor says that this could be a signal of kidney stones, an infection or a sign of cancer.

3. BLOOD IN MUCUS. In cold season, coughing up blood may appear to be a symptom related to a tough cold, but the amounts of blood could have other meanings. This may be a sign of a lung infection such as bronchitis, which is caused by exposure to bacteria.

"It could be a sign of an infection, but be more concerned if it persists," Pryor says. "It could be associated with lung cancer."

Any time you experience abnormal health signs, pay attention to the issue. Think about what may have triggered the symptoms and whether it has happened before.

Pryor offers three steps to take when an inexplicable case happens:

1. Take your symptom seriously. According to Pryor, underestimating the health concern means you will not take care of it. In order to receive medical treatment, you must first acknowledge it as an issue.

2. If it's threatening, call 911. Don't gamble with your life. If it's not threatening, but doesn't improve within 24-48 hours, you should consult a physician.

3. Be in tune with your health. Know your body's behaviors. Something that normally occurred rarely but begins to occur more often can only mean one thing: Your problem is entering stronger stages. Over time, the severity of the issues grow and can limit the options for treatment.

"The sooner you know about it, you can get on medication and live longer," Pryor says, "There are less options for treatment in the later stages."

Have you ever ignored a health symptom that turned into a bigger issue? Tell us your story.

8 Foods That Will Help You Live Longer

We hope this article reaches you before you make a dash out of the office for a lunch full of health mistakes. However, lunch hour is probably not the only time women make bad food decisions.

Many of the health issues that we deal with could be reduced or even prevented if they were more cautious with food choices.

Although health problems can be hereditary (and there's no escaping that), daily habits, including food choices and fitness patterns, can determine the severity of diseases.

According to the National Stroke Association, one half of all African-American women will die from stroke or heart disease. Ironically, this is one health issue that is not always caused by genetics.

We must fight the facts.

Icilma Fergus, MD. FACC., assistant professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, says one of a woman's best preventative measures is to eliminate processed foods and foods made with high fructose corn syrup from her diet.

According to the National Stroke Association, one out of three African Americans suffer from high blood pressure. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is cause by high levels of sodium and water in the blood stream, which cause the veins to pump with agitated force.

Fergus recommends green leafy vegetables as one of the top healthy food options to reduce high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.

"[Green vegetables] are a source of fiber which cleans out your intestines; they are low in calories and high in nutrients," says Fergus, chair of community programming for the Association of Black Cardiologists.

Sulforaphane, a phytochemical found in broccoli, increases the amount of enzymes that can deactivate free radicals and carcinogens, which causes certain types of cancer. Free radicals and carcinogens change the body's DNA and cause tumor growth.

According to Stanford Medicine's cancer center Website, phytochemicals fight off bacteria found in plants, and can also be found in green vegetables, dark berries (raspberries and blueberries) and soy nuts.

Fergus also says the omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish, such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, balance good and bad cholesterol levels to reduce heart risks, but it also drags tumor developments.

"You want to make sure you include fish in your diet," Fergus says. "Fish should most likely be baked, broiled or boiled."

Other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids include kidney beans, flaxseeds and nut oils.

Aside from eating foods packed with phytochemicals and omega-3 fatty acids, it is important to stick to a fitness diet.
"The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week to stay fit," Fergus says.

With alarming high blood pressure and stroke rates, it is important to choose foods with specific benefits using alternative cooking methods and incorporate a fitness routine in your daily schedule.

It can be difficult to challenge habits that you are comfortable with, but it will reduce various cancer types, hypertension and stroke risks.
